Chapter 3 continued

(Angela's POV)

"I brought you here. You were beaten up badly by those boys. What were you doing outside that late and why were you being beaten?", The mister asked. "Uhm....they....the guys wanted my bag and since I didn't give it willingly, they decided to take it by force", I said. "You still haven't told us why you were out that late and where you were going. Where do you stay anyways? I could take you h........" He didn't get to finish his statement because I interrupted him. "No! I don't want to go home. My dad would kill you. You see, I ran away from home", I said, dropping my head in shame. "Your father won't kill you just because you left home, he'd probably be very worried and I am sure he would be very happy to see you return safe and sound", He said. I shook my head continuously. "You don't know my dad. I left home because I couldn't stand the beatings anymore. I don't want to go back home. If I do, my plans would go to waste. I need to keep the promise I made to my mom", I said. "Ok, ok, let's say we're not taking you home. Who are you? What is your name? And why do you think your father is going to kill you?", He asked. "My name is Angela. Angela Daniels", They all stared at me wide eyed at the mention of my surname. "So do you understand why I don't want to go back home?", I asked. "You are the only child of Femi and Stella Daniels? The Femi Daniels everybody knows?", He asked. I replied, "Yes I am. I'll understand if you're skeptical about having me here at your home because of my father's reputation and I'll leave immediately. Thank you very much for helping me with those thugs and for bringing me here. I'd get my bag now and leave", I felt a hand on my shoulder as I was about to leave. I turned around to see the wife smiling up at me. "No my child, we didn't mean it that way. We're not asking you to leave, your identity came as a surprise to us. You have to understand that it is not everyday you see the child of an affluential person, beaten up on the street like you were. Come sit back down, we'd like to help you in anyway we can", she said. I looked at her husband to see him nodding his head. I heaved a sigh and sat back down. "My dad is an abusive man. All my life, all I've ever known was pain and suffering, alongside my mom. He beats us at the slightest provocation. Mom is the one always at the receiving end most of the time. Sometimes, he beats her till she passes out. I couldn't take it anymore so I decided to leave. I was going to bring my mom with me but she decided to stay behind, faithful to the vows she took on their wedding day, but I made a promise to her and myself to work hard, get a comfortable place and then go back for her, then we can live the nice and peaceful life we deserve and I am not going to stop until I fulfil that promise", I said. "But you look young, you're supposed to be in the university. Aren't you?" He asked. "Yes sir, I am a student of the University of Lagos, studying architecture but I decided to suspend schooling for now so that I can get my mom out of that house before he kills her", I replied.
